Glycolatoplatinum(II) complexes, [Pt(OCOCH2O)L2], having a novel five-membered ring structure were obtained by adding an equimolar quantity of glycolic acid to cis-[Pt(OH)2L2] (L: NH3, amines) in water followed by heating. These complexes have also been obtained by reaction of cis-[Pt(NO3)2L2] with sodium glycolate in neutral aqueous solution. These complexes have been characterized by SIMS, IR, and NMR spectroscopy.

A compound comprising a bone-seeking agent capable of targeting bone of high metabolic activity (a pyrophosphate or a bisphosphonate) and a radiotoxic element (a Pt isotope, preferably 195mPt or 193mPt, more preferably 195mPt-isotope) is found effective in the synergetic treatment of bone cancer. The use of the compound as a pharmaceutical in the treatment (by targeted short range damage induced by Auger electron emission) and/or diagnosis (by SPECT imaging of gamma emission) of malignant primary and/or metastasised bone cancers.

Concentration, temperature and/or solvent polarity control the speciation on the metal-directed self-assembly of a ditopic pyridyl ligand L with cis-protected Pd(II) metal centers. This results into a controllable dynamic system, involving a [Pd2L2]6+ metallacycle and a [Pd4L4]12+ ring-in-ring complex.
