Syntheses, crystal structures of blue luminescent complexes based on 2,6-bis(benzimidazolyl) pyridine

Two blue luminescent complexes, Cd(bbp)Cl-2 (1) and In(bbp)Cl-2(H20) (2) (bbp = 2, 6-bis(benzimidazolyl)pyridine) were synthesized and characterized by X-ray single crystal structure analyses. For complex 1: space group P2(1)/n, a = 14.491(3), b = 8.0147(19), c = 22.043(4) Angstrom, alpha = 90, beta = 117.71(11), gamma = 90degrees, V = 2266.3(9) Angstrom(3), Z = 4; for complex 2: space group P - 1, a = 7.075(3), b = 12.468(3), c = 14.418(3) alpha = 113.36(3) beta = 93.31(3), gamma = 90.45(3)degrees, V= 1165.0(7) Angstrom(3), Z = 2. Both complexes emit blue luminescence in solid state and DMF solution. Two emission peaks at 495 and 524 run are observed for complex 2 in DMF solution, the later can be assigned as metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) emission. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V.
