The tetranuclear mixed metal carbonyl cluster HRuRh3(CO)(12) reacts with ethanethiol to give a pentanuclear compound Rh2Ru3(CO)(10)(mu-SEt)(8) as a minor product. An X-ray diffraction study has revealed that five metal atoms form a thiolate-bridged chain structure without direct metal-metal bonds. The rhodium atoms end the chain, and each metal has two terminal carbonyl ligands.
