Rational Construction of Oligomeric Polymetallic Ensembles Consisting of Ru2H4 Subunits Interconnected by Flexible Carbon Chains

Novel dinuclear ruthenium bromo-carbonyl complexes {(eta(5)-C5Me4)(CH2)(n)(eta(5)-C5Me4))}Ru-2(CO)(4)Br-2 (n = 4 (4a), 5 (4b), and 6 (4e)) are synthesized by the metalation of the corresponding bis(cyclopentadiene)-type ligands C5Me4H(CH2)(n)C5Me4H (n = 4, 5, and 6) with Ru-3(CO)(12), followed by bromination. Allylation of 4 with allyl bromide and subsequent treatment with LiEt3BH affords tetranuclear ruthenium octahydride complexes 6a-e, composed of two Ru2H4 sites. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals that the approximate geometry of the four ruthenium atoms in 6b is parallelogram
