2-(2'-Thienyl)pyridine (Hthpy) reacts with [Ir(CO)(MeCN)(PPh(3))(2)]PF6 (1) in dichloromethane at room temperature to give [Ir(Co)(Hthpy)(PPh(3))(2)]PF6 (2), which contains an N-bound Hthpy. Direct cyclometallation occurs when the chelating ligand reacts with 1 under reflux conditions in dichloromethane/2-methoxyethanol solution. The product [Ir(H)(thpy)(CO)(PPh(3))(2)]PF6 (3) Can also be obtained through thermal rearrangement of 2. The structures of 2 and 3 have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies.
