Cp'(2)Ru(2)(CO)(4) complex. A dimer with bridging CO groups is significantly less basic than another dimer with only terminal CO groups although the donor abilities of their Cp' ligands are nearly equal. The Ru-Ru bond in Cp(2)Ru(2)(CO)(4) is substantially more basic than the Ru in the related mononuclear CpRu(CO)(2)H. The reaction of Ru-3(CO)(12) with tetramethyltrifluoromethylcyclopentadiene at various ratios of the reagents was studied. Refluxing of Ru-3(CO)(12) with a sixfold excess of tetramethyltrifluoromethylcyclopentadiene in octane in an inert atmosphere gave a complex, which is, according to X-ray diffraction data, a dimer, trans-[Ru(eta(5)-C5Me4CF3)(CO)(2)](2). The reaction under the same conditions but starting from Ru-3(CO)(12) and C5Me4CF3H in 2 : 1 molar ratio gave a hexaruthenium cluster [Ru-6(mu(3)-H)(eta(2)-mu(4)-CO)(2)(mu-CO)(CO)(12)(eta(5)- C5Me4CF3)], which was characterized by IR as well as H-1, C-13, and F-19 NMR spectroscopy. According to X-ray diffraction data, an Rug tetrahedron, in which two edges are bound by additional "bridging" Ru atoms, constitutes the frame of this compound. This complex has one (eta(5)-C5Me4CF3) ligand, as well as one (mu(3)-H) and two (eta(2)-mu(4)-CO) groups.
