A newoxychloride, BiSeO3Cl, is obtained at 300°C from a mixture of BiOCl and SeO2 as large colorless crystals. Room-temperature single-crystal X-ray investigation combined with an SHG test point to a noncentrosymmetric structure (space group P212121, a=6.353(2), b=7.978(3), c=8.651(4) Å, Z=4, RF=5.60%). Abstract Polycrystalline samples of the ternary compound Pb 2 Bi 4 Te 5 were prepared by a solvothermal process based on the reaction between BiCl 3 , Pb(NO 3 ) 2 , Te, and KBH 4 in N , N -dimethylformamide (DMF), and followed by a post heat-treatment of compacted pellets. gamma-BiSeO3Cl crystals were grown and characterized by x-ray microanalysis and second harmonic generation. The structure of gamma-BiSeO3Cl was determined by single-crystal x-ray diffraction: sp. gr. Pna2(1), a = 11.707(4) Angstrom, b = 7.047(5) Angstrom, c = 5.315(1) Angstrom, Z = 4, R-1 = 0.564, wR(2) = 0.1272. The structures and second-order nonlinear responses of alpha- and gamma-BiSeOP are discussed in comparison with those of MTeO3X (M = Bi, rare earth; X = Cl, Br, I) oxylialides.

A new bismuth(111) chloride complex with 1-methyl-2(3H)-imidazolethione (meimtH) has been synthesized and characterized via standard methods including solid state 1 3 C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and single crystal X-ray diffractometry. The complex, BiCl3[meimtH](2.5) (.) H2O, crystallizes in a triclinic space group. The complex has two different coordination spheres for bismuth, which are linked together in the solid state via hydrogen bonding. One coordination sphere is distorted octahedral with the ligands in meridional positions, while the other is a dimer consisting of two octahedra sharing a common edge through bridging chlorine atoms. The ligands are cis to each other and trans to the chlorine bridges, while the remaining four chlorine atoms are trans to each other and perpendicular to the chlorine-sulfur plane. There is no strong evidence for a stereoactive lone pair in either coordination sphere. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
