Isothermal decomposition behaviour of CeCo5+x compounds

The stability and decomposition behaviour of CaCu5-type CeCo5 + x compounds (0.1 less-than-or-equal-to x less-than-or-equal-to 1) at 650-degrees-C and 750-degrees-C have been investigated using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and electron probe microanalysis techniques. The homogeneity range of this CaCu5-type CeCo5 phase at 1000-1100-degrees-C has been assessed to be from 83.6 to 85.7 at.% Co (CeCo5.1-CeCo6). When the cobalt concentration is close to the lower limit of high temperature homogeneity range (83.6 at.% Co), only CeCo5-Ce5Co19 phase boundary precipitation of Ce2Co17 takes place; when the cobalt concentration is lower than the congruently melting composition (85.0 at.% Co), its decomposition behaviour is identical to that of the stoichiometric RCo5 compounds (R = Pr, Gd, Y). When the cobalt concentration is equal to or higher than 85.0 at.% Co, the decomposition behaviour of the grain boundary is essentially the same as that of the compound whose cobalt concentration is lower than 85.0 at.% Co, the intragranular decomposition is of the spinodal mode, and the parent phase (CeCo5.56 or CeCo6) decomposes into Ce2Co17 and isomorphous CeCo4.93.

Abstract The standard enthalpies of formation of intermetallic compounds of some Lanthanide–Cobalt systems have been measured by high temperature direct synthesis calorimetry at 1373 ± 2 K. The following results in kJ/mol of atoms are reported: CeCo 5 (−9.4 ± 3.3); Ce 2 Co 17 (−6.8 ± 3.2); PrCo 5 (−10.5 ± 2.4); Pr 2 Co 17 (−6.8 ± 3.6); NdCo 5 (−12.7 ± 2.6); Nd 2 Co 17 (−6.6 ± 2.7); SmCo 5 (−12.2 ± 1
The nuclearmagneticresonance of 59 Co nuclei in magnetic domains of CeCo 5 and SmCo 5 has been measured under external magneticfields up to 55 kOe at 4.2 K. In order to assign the observed NMR signals to each Co site, the 59 Conuclearmagneticresonance of Ce(Co 1- x Ni x ) 5 and Sm(Co 1- x Ni x ) 5 has also been measured under the same conditions. intermetallic compounds due to their single-phase characteristics and high configuration entropy. The magnetic cocktail effect is observed in magnetic measurements. These intermetallic compounds show low-temperature magnetic transition and field-induced ferromagnetic characteristics. 2∶17-type phase has only the rhombohedral structure, as does the binary Pr2Co17 phase. The metallographic structures of the Pr alloys in the composition range 1 to 3 at% Al show significant differences from the corresponding Ce alloys. Determination of the Curie temperatures of theR1}-xAlxCo5 alloys (R= Ce and Pr) in the composition range 0⩽x⩽0.24 showed good agreement between the measured and published values

pictures show that the particles are flakes, several μm in length and width and tens of nm in thickness. X-ray diffraction patterns and magnetic measurements prove that the flakes are crystalline with c-axes magnetic anisotropy. The easy magnetization axis is oriented perpendicular to the surface of the flake. A maximum coercivity of 3.3 kOe was obtained for the sample milled for 40 min.
