Unusual Transformation of [Fe{η5-C5H4P(OEt)2}2Pd(H2O)2](OTf)2 to a Hexanuclear Cyclopentadienylpalladium Complex

Transfer of a functionalized cyclopentadienyl ring under mild conditions is achieved. Treating a palladium dichloride complex with 1,1'-bis(diethylphosphonito)ferrocene, [Fe{eta(5)-C5H4P(OEt)(2)}(2)PdCl2] (1), with silver triflate gives the dicationic complex [Fe{eta(5)-C5H4P(OEt)(2)}(2)Pd(H2O)(2)](OTf)(2) (2). Unexpectedly, crystals grown from 2 in anhydrous CH2Cl2/Et2O appear to be the hexanuclear complex [Fe{eta(5):kappa(2)-C5H4P(OEt)(2)}(2)Pd{mu-eta(5):kappa(1)-C5H4P(OEt)(2)}Pd{mu-eta(5):kappa(1)-(EtO)(2)PC5H4}](2)(OTf)(4) (3), a product of cyclopentadienyl transfer from iron to palladium. The mechanism of the rearrangement is discussed.
