Comparison of the reactions of Ru(CO)2(triphos) (triphos=etp, ttp and Cyttp) with I2 and CH3I

The products of the reactions of I2 and CH3I with Ru(CO)2(triphos) (triphos = etp (PhP(CH2CH2PPh2)2), ttp (PhP(CH2CH2CH2PPh2)2) and Cyttp (PhP(CH2CH2CH2PCy2)2)) were characterized by P-31{H-1}, H-1, C-13{H-1} NMR and IR spectroscopy, and elemental analyses. The etp complex Ru(CO)2(etp) was prepared by treatment of Ru3(CO)12 with etp in refluxing benzene. fac-[RuX(CO)2(etp)I (X = I, Me) were produced when Ru(CO)2(etp) was treated with I2 and CH3I, respectively, either at room temperature or on refluxing. At room temperature, cis-mer-[RuI(CO)2(triphos)]I and [RuMe(CO)2(triphos)]I (triphos = ttp and Cyttp) were the products of the reaction of Ru(CO)2(triphos) with I2 and CH3I, respectively. The neutral complexes RuI2(CO)(triphos) (triphos = ttp and Cyttp) were synthesized by treatment of Ru(CO)2(triphos) with I2 in refluxing benzene.
