    A set of new chalcogen-bridged mixed metal clusters, Cp2Mo2M(mu(3)-E)(CO)(7), (M = Fe, Ru, Os; E = S, Se) have been synthesised and characterised by IR and NMR spectroscopy, and structures of Cp2Mo2Ru(mu(3)-Se)(CO)(7) and Cp2Mo2Os(mu(3)-Se)(CO)(7) have been established by single crystal X-ray diffraction methods. The nonlinear optical properties of these clusters were investigated through the Z-scan technique, using 35 ps laser pulses at 532 nm. We report large refractive third order nonlinearity for these clusters indicating their promise for optical limiting applications. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

    The sequential substitution of two Fe(CO)3 groups in [(μ-H)2Fe3(μ3-Se) (CO)9] with isolobal fragments CpW(CO)2 (the first stage) and CpMo(CO)2 (the second stage) has been shown to result in the title heterotrimetal cluster [FeMoW(μ3-Se) (CO)7Cp2]. Its structure and the structure of its [FeW2(μ3-Se) (CO)7Cp2] analog obtained previously have been determined by X-ray analysis.

    The reaction of Fe-2(CO)(6)(mu-SSe) and Cp2Mo2(CO)(4) in benzene at room temperature for 2 h, yielded the new isomeric mixed-metal, mixed-dichalcogenide clusters trans-Cp2Mo2Fe2(CO)(8)(mu(3)-S)(mu(3)-Se) (1) and cis-Cp2Mo2Fe2(Co)(8)(mu(3)-S)(mu(3)-Se) (4). The new mixed-metal clusters 1 and 4 could also be obtained when Fe-3(CO)(9)(mu(3)-S)(mu(3)-Se) and Cp2Mo2(CO)(6) were heated at 65 degrees C in benzene for 36 h. Similarly, the room-temperature reaction of Fe-2(CO)(6)(mu-STe) with Cp2Mo2(CO)(4) in benzene for 2 h and the thermolytic reaction of Fe-3(CO)(9)(mu(3)-S)(mu(3)-Te) with Cp2Mo2(CO)(6) in benzene for 36 h afforded the new isomeric clusters trans-Cp2Mo2Fe2(CO)(8)(mu(3)-S)(mu(3)-Te) (9) and cis-Cp2Mo2Fe2(CO)(8)(mu(3)-S)(mu(3)-Te) (11). The new clusters have been characterised by IR and by H-1-, Se-77-, Te-125-NMR spectroscopy. Clusters 1 and 4 have also been structurally characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods.
