  A process for producing an alkylcyclopentanone derivative of formula (1) or (5) which comprises reacting a cyclopentanone derivative of formula (2) or (4) and an alkyl halide of formula (3) or (6) in an organic solvent in the presence of a molecular sieve and an alkaline metal hydroxide:         R3X   (3)         RkX   (6) wherein R1 is a C1-C4 alkyl group; R2 is a hydrogen atom or a C1-C5 alkyl group; R3 is a C1-C5 alkyl group; R4 is a hydrogen atom or a C1-C5 alkyl group; R5 is a C1-C5 alkyl group; Rk is as defined for R4 and R5; Y is a halogen atom or a C1-C5 alkyl, C1-C5 haloalkyl, phenyl, cyano or nitro group; and n is an integer of 0 to 5 wherein when n is 2 or more each Y may be identical or different.
