In the structures of N,N' difluorotetrachloroosmate(IV), (I), and N,N'-methylenedipyridinium trans-difluorotetrachloroosmate(IV), (II), cis- and trans-[(C5H5N)(2)CH2][OsCl4F2], the trans influence in the F-Os-Cl axes of (I) lengthens the average Os-F distance to 1.948 Angstrom and shortens the average Os-Cl distance to 2.316 Angstrom, compared with those of the symmetrically coordinated axes F-Os-F in (II) and Cl-Os-Cl in (I) and (II), respectively, with mean values of 1.926 and 2.337 Angstrom observed for Os-F and Os-Cl, respectively.
