Ferrimagnetic, bimetallic chain systems: [Cu(tren)]ReCl6 and [Cu(tren)]ReCl6·2CH3OH where tren=tris(2-aminoethyl)amine

Reaction of copper(H) chloride with tren [tris(2-aminoethyl)amine] and tetrabutylammonium hexachlororhenate [BU4N](2)ReCl6 produced a new kind of binuclear compounds: [Cu(tren)]ReCl6 (1) and [Cu(tren)]ReCl(6)(.)2CH(3)OH (2) in which [ReCl6](2-) anions and [Cu(tren)](2+) cations are held united by electrostatic forces. The magnetic behaviour of 1 and 2 has been investigated over the temperature range 1.7-300 K. Compound 1 behaves as a ferrimagnetic (CuReIV)-Re-II bimetallic, one-dimensional chain with intrachain antiferromagnetic coupling. Compound 2 shows weak antiferromagnetic interactions within Cu-II-Re-IV units. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
