  The 1:1 complexes of BX3 (X = Cl or Br) with the ligands 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) have been prepared and characterized as salts [BX2L]+X- by means of B-11 NMR spectroscopy. The complex 2BCl3.bipy has also been observed in solution, and deduced to have the structure [BCl2bipy]+[BCl4]-.
