The Al-rich part of the Al-Re phase diagram was reinvestigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction and differential thermal analysis. The earlier reported Al12Re, Al6Re, and Al11Re4 phases were confirmed. Close to the Al4Re composition a high-temperature h-Al4Re and a low-temperature 1-Al4Re phase were found to be formed at slightly different compositions. Both exhibited compositional ranges. A new phase was revealed close to the Al3Re composition. The Al11Re4 phase is formed congruently at 1650 degrees C, Al3Re peritectically at 1610 degrees C, h-Al4Re peritectically at 1410 degrees C, 1-Al4Re peritectically at similar to 1000 degrees C, Al6Re peritectically at 813 degrees C and Al12Re peritectically at 746 degrees C. Finally, the Al12Re-(Al) eutectic is formed at 658 degrees C. The Al3Re and h-Al4Re are decomposed by eutectoid reactions at similar to 946 and 833 degrees C, respectively. The structure of the h-Al4Re phase has not yet been clarified, but it is distinctly different from the Al4W phase suggested earlier. The structure of 1-Al4Re was confirmed. The Al3Re phase was found to have a monoclinic structure with a = 0.5180(4) rim, b = 3.97641(9) nm, c = 0.4955(3) nm and beta = 99.55(7)degrees. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
