  • Synthesis, antimicrobial and antiproliferative activities of new self-assembly benzimidazole-bridged aren ruthenium rectangles in human breast cancer cells

    Some novel benzimidazole-bridged aren ruthenium rectangle compounds of the general structure [Ru2(p-cymene)2(µ4-OO∩OO)}2(µ4-bbim)]4+ (bbim = 1,1′-butyl-2-ene-di(benzimidazole) were obtained from the corresponding double-nuclear arene ruthenium compounds [Ru2(p-cymene)2(µ4-OO∩OO)Cl2] (OO∩OO = 2,5-dioxido-1,4-benzoquinonato (dobq), 2,5-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinonato (dClbq), 2,5-dibromo-1,4-benzoquinonato (dBrbq), oxalato (oxa), and 5,8-dioxido-1,4-naphtoquinonato (donq) via reaction with the bbim molecule and AgCF3SO3. The antiproliferative activity and anti-cancer properties of the tetranuclear arene ruthenium compounds were evaluated against the human breast cancer cell line (MDA-231-MB). Compound 2 showed the highest antiproliferative effect among the compounds during 24- and 48-h administration. In addition, all other compounds exhibited very good cancer cell selectivity and very low micromolar cytotoxicity. The antimicrobial activities of the synthesized compounds were also determined against various test microorganisms. Evaluations were carried out using the disk diffusion method and the dilution method. In particular, the compounds exhibited more potential antibacterial effects against Gram negative bacteria than against Gram positive bacteria and showed a superior antifungal effect against Candida species. The results revealed the benzimidazole-bridged aren ruthenium rectangle compounds to be very strong and potent inhibitors.

  • Stepwise Formation of Molecular Rectangles of Half-Sandwich Rhodium and Ruthenium Complexes Containing Bridging Chloranilate Ligands

    Binuclear complexes [Cp*Rh-2(2)(mu-CA)Cl-2] (2a) and [(p-cymene)(2)Ru-2(mu-CA)Cl-2] (2b) (CA = chloranilate) were obtained by the reactions of [Cp*RhCl(mu-Cl)](2) (1a) or [(p-cymene)RuCl(mu-Cl)](2) (1b) with H(2)CA in the presence of base, respectively. Treatment of 2a or 2b with bidentate ligands (L) such as pyrazine, 4,4'-dipyridine (bpy), 2,5-bis(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-oxadiazole (bpo), and E-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethene (bpe) in the presence of AgOTf (OTf = CF3SO3) in CH3OH gave the corresponding tetranuclear complexes, with the general formulas [Cp*Rh-4(4)(mu-CA)(2)(mu-L)2](OTf)4 (3a-d) and [(p-eymene)(4)Ru-4(u-CA)(2)(mu-L)(2)](OTf)(4) (4a-d), respectively. The molecular structures Of [Cp*Rh-4(4)(mu-CA)(2)(mu-bpy)(2)](OTf)(4) (3b), [(p-cymene)(4)Ru-4(mu-CA)(2)(mu-bPY)(2)](OTf)(4) (4b), and [(p-cymene)(4)Ru-4(mu-CA)(2)(mu-bPe)(2)](OTf)(4) (4d) have been determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis and revealed that the metal centers were connected by pyridyl ligands and bis-bidentate chloranilate (CA) ligands to construct a rectangular cavity with different dimensions and strong pi interactions between independent molecules to form rectangle channels in the solid state.

    Series of tetranuclear arene ruthenium complexes of the general formula [Ru-4(p-cymene)(4)(mu(2)-N boolean AND N)(2) (mu(4)-OO boolean AND OO2][CF3SO3](4) (N boolean AND N = 2,5- dipyridyl-thiophene (dptp), 3,6-dipyridyl-1,2,4,5-tetrazine (dptz), 3,6-dipyridyl-1,4-dihydro-1,2,4,5-tetrazine (dpdt)) were prepared by reacting the dinuclear arene ruthenium complexes Ru-2(p-cymene)(2)(mu(4)-OO boolean AND OO)Cl-2 (OO boolean AND OO = oxalato (oxa), 2,5-dioxido-1,4-benzoquinonato (dobq), 2,5-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinonato (dClbq), 2,5-dioxido-3-undecyl-1,4-benzoquinonato (dubq), 5,8-dioxido-1,4-naphtoquinonato (donq)) with silver trifluoromethanesulfonate, followed by the addition of the corresponding N boolean AND N linkers. All metalla-rectangles were characterized by standard techniques, including infrared, UV-visible, H-1, C-13 NMR spectroscopy and ESI mass spectrometry: Thus confirming the rectangular structure of the complexes, and showing the facility of forming tetranuclear arene ruthenium metalla-rectangles.
