  A new preparative method of [Ru(bpy)2 (CO)Cl]+ (bpy=2,2′-bipyridine) and the water gas shift reaction (WGSR) catalyzed by this complex are described. A cyclic mechanism for the WGSR is proposed to proceed via [Ru(bpy)2(CO)2]2+, [Ru(bpy)2(CO) (COOH)]+, and [Ru(bpy)2(CO)H]+ as intermediates successively; the former two were isolated.
