Functional Sidearm Promoted Electron-Transfer Reactions: A New Route to Metallacarboranes Incorporating the η7-arachno-Carboranyl Ligands

Reactions of [nido-(Me2NCH2CH2)RC2B10H10]-Na-2 (R = H, MeOCH2CH2, Me2NCH2CH2) with ZrCl4-(THF)(2) or SmI2(THF)(x) gave unprecedentedly metalla-carboranes with mu(7)-arachno-carboranyl ligands, in which the heteroatom-containing pendant sidearms are both electronically and entropically necessary for the formation of such complexes with the central metal ions in the highest oxidation state.
