New insights into the cage fragmentation of As4S4 and As4S3 by their interaction with (C5Me4Et)2Fe2(CO)4

The reaction of Cp(2)(x)Fe(2)(CO)(4) (Cp(x) = C(5)Me(4)Et) with As4S4 was reinvestigated with respect to the formation of CO-containing intermediate products. At 60 degrees C, [Cp(3)(x)Fe(3)(CO)(6)As3S3] (III) and [Cp(3)(x)Fe(3)(CO)(6)As3S2] (IV) were formed exclusively, whereas at 110 degrees C [Cp(x)Fe(CO)(2)As5S2] (V) was formed along with the known [Cp(2)(x)Fe(2)As(2)S(2)] (I) and [Cp(2)(x)Fe(2)As(2)S(3)] (II). Complexes III-V were characterized spectroscopically. Novel ring and cage structures are proposed. The compounds may be thermally converted into I and II. The same results are obtained if As4S3 or As2S3 are employed instead of As4S4.
