Complexfluorides of protactinium having a Pa/M ratio of one (where M = K, Rb, or NH4) have been prepared from concentrated solutions of HF. These MPaF6 compounds are isostructural with the corresponding compounds of pentavalent uranium but not with the tantalum analogs. The size of protactinium (V) is but slightly larger than that of uranium (V)

The compounds UF4 and UF6, co-condensed with various alkali metals and alkali-metal fluorides, have provided i.r. spectroscopic evidence for the formation of MUF4, MUF5, MUF6, M2UF6, and MUF7 species. The bands are discussed in terms of the anion symmetry and the interactions between the alkali-metal and uranium ions.
