An aqueous route for producing nanopowders of intermetalliccompounds is presented. The method was developed to produce powders of PrPt 2 and CePt 2 for use as anodeelectrocatalysts in porous directethanol polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuelcellanodes. Powders that are relatively pure with average particle diameters of ca. 25 nm and specific surface areas of ca. 15 m 2 /g were produced. X-ray
The temperature stability of the Pr3Pt4 compound was investigated by isothermal annealing at different temperatures, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). It was found that the decomposition reaction Pr3Pt4 -> PrPt + PrPt2 took place at temperatures ranging approximately from 360 degrees C to 830 degrees C anditwas an exothermal reaction. After annealing at 500-750 degrees C for 7 days, the Pr3Pt4 compound decomposes completely into the two neighboring compounds PrPt and PrPt2. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
