  A series of tantalum and niobium imido complexes containing pyrazolato ancillary ligands has been synthesized by salt methathesis reactions with alkylimidotrichlorobis(pyridine)metal starting materials. The complexes M(Nt-Bu)(t-Bu(2)Pz)(3) (M = Nb, Ta), Ta(Ni-Pr)(t-Bu(2)Pz)(3). Ta(Nt-Bu)(Me(2)Pz)(3)(py), and M(Nt-Bu)(t-Bu(2)Pz)(2)(Cl)(py) (M = Nb. Ta) were prepared and completely characterized. The crystal and molecular structures of Ta(Nt-Bu)(t-Bu(2)Pz)(3). Ta(Ni-Pr)(t-Bu(2)Pz)(3). Ta(Nt-Bu)(Me(2)Pz)(3)(py), and Ta(Nt-Bu)(t-Bu(2)Pz)(2)(Cl)(py) are described. The potential use of tantalum imido pyrazolato complexes as precursors for the growth of tantalum nitride films by CVD techniques is discussed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
