The trigonal bipyramidal species [Ir(CO)3(PEt3)2]BF4 reacts with PH3 to form [lr(CO)2(PH3)(PEt3)2]BF4. Both of these undergo oxidative addition reactions with HX (X=Cl, Br, 1) with loss of CO, except in the case of X=I when the phosphine complex eliminates PH3 instead. SiH3Br reacts to give a simple oxidative addition product in each case but when PH3 is present the solvent and anion both affect the outcome of the reaction. Enrichment with C-13 in the carbonyl positions allowed the use of C-13 NMR spectroscopy to identify the products.
