    Reaction of Ru-3(mu-dppm)(CO)(10) [dppm=bis(diphenylphosphino)methane] with one equivalent of dppa [dppa=bis(diphenylphosphino)acetylene] afforded Ru-3(mu-dppm)(CO)(9)(eta(1)-dppa) which possesses a monodentate dppa ligand, an X-ray structural study revealing that all phosphorus donor atoms are arranged in equatorial coordination sites with respect to the triruthenium cluster plane. Reaction of Ru-3(CO)(9)(NCMe)(3) with excess dppa afforded fair yields of Ru-3(CO)(9)(eta(1)-dppa)(3),which possesses three monodentate dppa ligands. Reaction of three equivalents of Ru-3(mu-dppm)(CO)(9)(eta(1)-dppa) with Ru-3(CO)(9)(NCMe)(3) or reaction of Ru-3(CO)(9)(eta(1)-dppa)(3) with excess Ru-3(mu-dppm)(CO)(10) afforded low yields of the dodecanuclear first-generation dendrimer Ru-3(CO)(9)(PPh2C2PPh2Ru3(mu-dppm)(CO)(9)}(3). Reaction of WIr3(mu-CO)(3)(CO)(8)(eta-C5Me5) with excess Ru-3(mu-dppm)(CO)(9)(eta(1)-dppa) afforded fair yields of the decanuclear dppa-bridged tri-cluster WIr3(CO)(9){PPh2C2PPh2Ru3(mu-dppm)(CO)(9)}(2)(eta-C5Me5).     The versatility and synthetic potential of the novel tris-acetonitrile-substituted cluster Ru3(CO)9(MeCN)3 (3) for the formation of ruthenaboranes in unprecedently high yields are illustrated. Reaction of 3 with [Me4N][B3H8] yields HRu3(CO)9B2H5 (65%) and with BH3·THF yields HRu6B(CO)17 (60%).

    Reaction of W(eta(2) -PhCequivalent toCPh)(3)(NMe3) (1) and Ph(2)PCequivalent toCPPh(2) (dppa) produces W(eta(2)-PhCequivalent toCPh)(3)(eta(1)-Ph(2)PCequivalent toCPPh(2)) (2), which contains a pendant phosphine group. Treatment of 2 with W(CO)(4)(NCMe)(2) yields [W(eta(2) -PhCequivalent toCPh)(3)](mu, eta(2)-Ph(2)PCequivalent to CPPh2)[W(CO)(4)(NCMe)] (3). Compound 2 reacts with Os-3(CO)(10)(NCMe)(2) to afford Os-3(CO)(10)[(mu, eta(2)-Ph(2)PCequivalent toCPPh(2))W(eta(2)- PhCequivalent toCPh)(3)](2) (4), and reacts with Ru-3(CO)(9)(NCMe)(3) to afford Ru-3(CO)(9)[(mu,eta(2)-PhPCequivalent toCPPh(2))W(eta(2)-PhCequivalent toCPh)(3)](3) (5).
