The 3-thiapentane-1,5-dithiolato-hexamethylbenzene ruthenium(II) complex as a metalloligand to Group 14 elements

The coordination chemistry Of [(C6Me6)Ru(tpdt)] (1) (tpdt = 3-thiapentane-1,5-dithiolate) towards Group 14 moieties has been studied. The reactions with Ph2MCl2 (M = Ge or Sn) and Ph3MCl (M = Sn or Pb) led to the isolation of [(eta(6)-C6Me6)Ru}(mu(2)-eta(2):eta(3)-C4H8S3) MCl(eta(1)-C6H5)(2)}](PF6), [M = Ge (5)(PF6), Sri (6)(PF6)] and [(eta(6)-C6Me6)Ru}(mu(2)-eta(1):eta(3)-C4H8S3)M(eta(1)-C6H5)(3)}](PF6) [M = Sn (7)(PF6), Pb (8)(PF6)], respectively. The reaction with Ph2SiCl2 in the presence of NH4PF6 gave a quantitative yield of [(eta(6)-C6Me6)Ru(eta(3)-C4H9S3)](PF6), (4)(PF6) which converts to [(eta(6)-C6Me6)Ru}(2)(MeCN)(mu(2)-eta(2):eta(3)-C4H8S3)](PF6)(2), (3)(PF6)(2). The X-ray structures show that I can either act as a monodentate metalloligand as in 7 and 8 or a bidentate ligand as in 5 and 6. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
