Synthesis and Characterization of Ru3 and Ru4 Clusters with Isopropenylbenzene and Diisopropenylbenzene Ligands

The four clusters Ru-3(CO)(7)(mu(3)-eta(2):eta(2):eta(2)-C6H4-eta(2)-CCH3CH2}(2)-1,3), 1, Ru-4(CO)(9)(mu(3)-eta(2):eta(2):eta(2)- C6H4-eta(2)-CCH3CH2}(2)-1,3), 2, Ru-3(CO)(8)(mu(3)-eta(2):eta(2):eta(2)-C6H5-eta(2)-CCH3CH2}), 3, and Ru-4(CO)(10)- (mu(3)-eta(2):eta(2):eta(2)-C6H5-eta(2)-CCH3CH2}), 4, have been prepared and characterized both spectroscopically and by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The presence of the propenyl substituent(s) on the aromatic ligands results in the observed preference of the rings toward a facial coordination mode, formally donating all their pi-electrons to the metal cluster unit.
