Tetrakis(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)porphyrin (TDMPPH2), tetrakis(benzo-9-crown-3)porphyrin (TC3PH(2)), and tetrakis(benzo-12-crown-4)porphyrin (TC4PH(2)), have been synthesized and characterized by UV-Vis, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and IR spectroscopies. These porphyrin derivatives were metallated by Zn2+ and Fe3+ ions. The interactions of Na+, K+, NH4+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Ba2+ and Al3+ cations with TC3PH(2), TC4PH(2), ZnTC3P, FeTC3PCl and (FeTC3P)(2)O were studied. UV-Vis and Al-27 NMR investigations have shown that Al3+ and Mg2+ cations interact with both porphyrin macrocycles and crown ether rings. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
