SYNTHESIS, ELECTROCHEMICAL BEHAVIOR, SPECTRAL, AND MAGNETIC STUDIES OF COPPER(II) COMPLEXES WITH FERROCENE-CONTAINING HYDRAZONES

A new series of copper(II) complexes of the stoichiometry [L2CU].nH(2)O and [(HL)(2)CUCl2].2H(2)O, where HL is 1-acetylferrocene-benzoylhydrazone, 1-acetylferrocene-4-chlorobenzoylhydrazone, 1-acetylferrocene-4-hydroxy-benzoylhydrazone or 1-acetylferrocene-4-methylbenzoylhydrazone, HL1, HL2, HL3 or HL4, respectively, were synthesized and characterized. IR data showed that all ligands act as monobasic or neutral bidentates; coordinated to copper ion via the oxygen and azomethine N atoms. ESR spectra and magnetic data showed that [(L-1)(2)CU]-H2O and [(L-3)(2)Cu].2H(2)O are polymeric exhibiting magnetic exchange interaction. ESR data also indicate that all complexes are associated with a d(x2-y2) ground state. The electrochemical behavior of the free ligands and their copper(II) complexes were studied and are discussed.
