The thermal expansion and electrical resistivity of the pseudobinary compound Ce1-xLaxAl3

Temperature dependence of the thermal expansion coefficient alpha and the electrical resistivity rho of Ce1-xLaxAl3 compounds has been measured for various lanthanum concentrations x. It is found that the temperature dependence of alpha and rho is influenced largely by substitution of lanthanum. The results are briefly discussed in connection with the Kondo effect and crystalline electric field splitting of the 4f level of the Ce3+ ion.
Phase equilibria in the ternary Al–Zr–La system

The phase relationships in the Al-Zr-La ternary system at 773 K have been investigated for the first time mainly by means of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive analysis (EDX). The existence of the Al4La5 and AlLa2 binary compounds has been confirmed in this ternary system. The isothermal section consists of 18 single-phase regions, 33 two-phase regions and 16 three-phase regions. No ternary compound was observed in this work. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
High pressure X-ray diffraction study of LaAl2 and LaAl3

LaAl2 and LaAl3 exhibit MgCu2 type (space group Fd3m) and Ni3Sn type (space group P6(3)/mmc) structures, respectively, at NTP. High pressure X-ray diffraction studies on these two systems are carried out up to similar to35 and similar to30 GPa, respectively, with a diamond anvil cell, mounted on a high precision Guinier diffractometer. The volume compression determined at the highest pressures are about 33% for LaAl2 and 23% for LaAl3. Neither compound shows any structural transition. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Effect of pressure on the electrical resistivity of the heavy fermion CeAl3

The electrical resistivity rho(T) of the heavy fermion compound CeAl3 has been measured under high pressure up to 1.5 GPa in order to clarify the volume dependence of the electronic state in the heavy fermion. It is found that the temperature showing a maximum in the rho(T) curve increases with increasing pressure. Compressibility was also measured using the X-ray diffraction technique at high pressure. On the basis of the data, a quantitative analysis of the volume dependent energy scale is examined using a simple theoretical model.
