    Ten coordination compounds, namely Mn(NA)(2)Cl-2 center dot 4H(2)O (1), Fe(NA)Cl-3(H2O)(2) (2), Co(NA)(2)(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O (3), Ni(NA)Cl-2 center dot 5H(2)O (4), Cu(NA)Cl-2 center dot 3H(2)O (5), Zn(NA)(NO3)(2)center dot H2O (6), Pd(NA)(2)Cl-2 center dot H2O (7), Cd(NA)Cl-2 center dot H2O (8), Pt(NA)(2)Cl-4 center dot 5H(2)O (9) and Au(NA)Cl-3 (10) were obtained by the reactions of the corresponding transition metal salts with vitamin B3/niacin (NA) in the presence of 1:4 (v:v) distilled water: methanol solvent at 70 degrees C for about 30 min, and their suggested structures were determined by elemental analyses, molar conductivity, (infrared, UV-vis) spectra, effective magnetic moment in Bohr magnetons, electron spin resonance (ESR), thermal analysis (TG), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) as well as scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results revealed that in complexes 1, 3, 7, and 9 both of two NA ligand coordinates one metal ion to form four or six coordinated structures, while in compound 10, one NA ligand coordinate to Au+++ ion to form a square-planar geometry with N-bonded pyridine ligand is suggested, and (2, 4, 5, 6 and, 8) complexes have 1:1 structures. Antimicrobial and antitumor activities were assessment against some kind of (G(+) and G(-)) bacteria, fungi and breast carcinoma cells (MCF-7-cell line). (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
