Synthesis and characterization of some unique heterocyclic derivatives containing aluminium(III) atoms in 4- and 6-coordination states—3. Reaction of bis(β-diketonato) aluminium(III)-di-μ-isopropoxo di-isopropoxo aluminium(III) with 2-mercaptoethanol and 2,2′-thiodiethanol

Reactions of bis(beta-diketonato) aluminium (III)-di-mu-isopropoxo di-isopropoxo aluminium(III), [(beta-diketo)(2)Al(mu-OPri)(2)Al(OPri)(2)], with 2-mercaptoethanol, [HO(CH2)(2)SH], and 2,2'-thiodiethanol, [HO(CH2)(2)S(CH2)(2)OH], in 1:1 stoichiometry have resulted in the synthesis of [(beta-diketo)(2)Al(mu-OPri)(2)Al{O(CH2)(2)S}](n) and [(beta-diketo)(2)Al(mu-OPri)(2) Al{O(CH2)(2)S(CH2)(2)O}](n), respectively (where, 1 for ethylacetoacetato and n = 2 for acetylacetonato). These are soluble in common organic solvents. Suitable structures based on elemental analysis, molecular weight measurements, IR and NMR (H-1, C-13 and Al-27) spectral studies have been proposed. Al-27 spectra show the presence of both octahedrally and tetrahedrally coordinated aluminium sites.
