Synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic characterization of a new phenoxo-bridged binuclear manganese(III) Schiff base complex exhibiting single-molecule-magnet behavior
摘要:
A new phenoxo-bridged binuclear manganese(III) Schiff base complex, [Mn(L)(N-3)](2) (1) where L = N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,2-propanediamine has been synthesized and characterized by IR, elemental analysis, crystal structure analysis and variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. The single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that the structure is dimeric with each phenolate oxygen atom acting as a bridge between two symmetry equivalent Mn atoms. Low temperature magnetic study shows that the complex exhibits intra-dimer ferromagnetic exchange and single-molecule-magnet (SMM) behavior as well. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties of dimeric MnIII Schiff base complexes including pseudohalide ligands: Ferromagnetic interactions through phenoxo bridges and single molecule magnetism
Three new phenoxo-bridged dimeric compounds of Mn-III with tetradentate Schiff bases (salpnH(2), salmenH(2) and acphpnH(2)) and pseudohalide ligands have been synthesized and characterized by crystallography and dc and ac magnetic measurements. Mn(salpn)NCO (1) and Mn(salmen)N-3 (2) exhibit intradimer ferromagnetic exchange (J = 0.42(2) cm(-1) for 1, J = 0.58(1) cm(-1) for 2, (H) over cap = -2J (S) over cap (1)(S) over cap (2). The chi T-m product of 1 continuously increases upon lowering temperature, reaching a value of 10.01 cm(3) mol(-1) K at 1.98 K. In the case of 2, the chi T-m product reaches a maximum value of 7.85 cm(3) mol(-1) K at 5.82 K and decreases upon further cooling to a value of 6.34 cm(3) mol(-1) K at 2 K, indicating the operation of interdimer anti ferromagnetic interactions. Frequency dependence of ac magnetic susceptibility shows single-molecule-magnetic (SMM) behavior in the temperature range 2-10 K for both compounds. In sharp contrast, Mn(acphpn)N-3 (3) exhibits antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. salpnH(2) = N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-diaminopropine, salmenH(2) = N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,2-diaminopropane and acphpnH(2) = N,N'-bis(2-hydroxyacetophenone)-1,3-diaminopropane. Four Mn-III quadridentate Schiff-base compounds have been prepared and structurally characterized: [Mn(salpn)(CH3OH)(2)]BPh4 (1), [Mn-2(salpn)(2)(N-3)(2)] (2), [Mn-2(salpn)(2)(NCS)(2)] (3), [Mn-2(salpn)(2)(H2O)(2)](H2O)(ClO4)(2) (4) (salpn = N,N'-(1,2-propylene)-bis-(salicylideneiminate)). Among them, 1 is a discrete Mn-III monomeric complex with a square-bipyramidal geometry. Complexes 2, 3 and 4 form the similar phenolate-bridged out-of-plane dimers. Magnetic susceptibility studies reveal that 2, 3 and 4 all exhibit ferromagnetic intra-dimer coupling between Mn-III ions. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
