    [ReH2(CO)4][NEt4] in n-tetradecane, has been characterized by an X-ray crystal structural analysis of the [PPh4]+ salt, and shown to contain a monocapped octahedral arrangement of rhenium atoms with an encapsulated carbon atom.

    isolated from the pyrolysis of [ReH2(CO)4](NEt4) in n-tetradecane/decalin, contains an octahedral metal cluster, with ReRe bond lengths in the range 2.939(2)–3.096(3) Å; the hydrogen atoms are assumed to bridge two faces of the octahedron which share an edge, as deduced from a comparative analysis of the X-ray structure and the 13C NMR spectra at various temperatures.

    The reaction between [Re3(µ-H)3(CO)10(NCMe)2] and [ReH2(CO)4] affords the novel hydridocarbonyl cluster [Re4(µ-H)5(CO)14]. Its NEt4+ salt has been investigated by X-ray analysis; the crystals are monoclinic, space group P21/n, with a= 14.038(6), b= 15.152(5), c= 15.501(6)Å, β= 101.79(3)°, and Z= 4. The structure was solved and refined on the basis of 3 169 significant counter data, to a final R value

    The first five-membered rings of metal atoms connected by M-M or M-H-M bonds only have been obtained by a Re2 +Re3 condensation in which a polyhydride acts as a bridging bidentate ligand toward a coordinatively unsaturated fragment (see scheme below). In spite of the octahedral coordination of the Re centers, the Re5 rings display conformations (twisted and envelope) comparable with those observed for organic five-membered rings of tetrahedral carbon atoms.
