Infrared Spectra of Alkyldiboranes. III. 1,2‐Dimethyl‐ and 1,2‐Diethyldiboranes

The infrared spectra of three isotopic variants of 1,2-dimethyldiborane—(CH3B10H2)2, (CH3BH2)2, (CH3BD2)2—and of five 1,2-diethyldiboranes—(C2H5B10H2)2, (C2H5BH2)2, (C2H5BD2)2, (C2D5BH2)2, (C2D5BD2)2—are reported and frequency assignments are made. 1,2-Dialkyldiboranes are very stable with respect to decomposition, but on prolonged standing rearrange to 1,1-dialkyldiboranes. Appearance of absorptions at ca 2100 and 1550 cm—1 is the first indication of the presence of 1,1-dialkyldiborane impurity. Although not conclusive, the evidence favors existence of predominantly cis configurations.
Dimethylindium octahydrotriborate, Me2InB3H3: synthesis, crystal structure and spectroscopic properties of a volatile indium hydride

Reaction between trimethylindium and tetraborane(10) at room temperature yields the volatile, viscous liquid dimethylindium octahydrotriborate, the first reported example of a volatile indium hydride; spectroscopic properties of the vapour indicate a molecular structure akin to that of Me2A1B3H8 although the crystal structure implies a more ionic formulation, [Me2In]+[B3H8]–, with the coordination at each indium centre being augmented via secondary intermolecular interactions with terminal hydrogen atoms.
Comparison of the mass spectra of isotopically normal and 10B-enriched trimethylboroxines makes possible the identification of the various fragments. The spectra furnish independent substantiation of the molecular weight and structure of (CH3)3B3O3—a ring with considerable aromatic character.
