The reaction of [Ph4]I, phosphonium iodide, with the appropriate cluster precursor, e.g. [Os3(CO)11(MeCN)] or [M3(CO)10(MeCN2)] (M = Ru or Os), in the presence of base, BaO, has been shown to be a highly efficient route to the phosphine-substituted clusters [Os3(CO)11(PH3)] and the phosphido-bridged cluster [HM3(CO)10(mu-2-PH2)] (M = Ru or Os).
