芳香烃是指具有苯环基本结构或具有芳香族化合物性质的闭链烃。可分为单环芳烃、多环芳烃和非苯芳烃。单环芳烃分子中只含有一个苯环,如甲苯、二甲苯、乙苯、苯乙烯、苯乙炔等。多环芳烃分子中含有两个或两个以上的苯环。根据苯环相互联结的方式,又可分为:①多苯代脂烃,如二苯甲烷、三苯甲烷、二苯乙烯、四苯乙烯等;②联苯和联多苯,如联苯、联三苯、联四苯等;③稠环芳烃,如萘、蒽、菲、茚、芴、苊、芘、蔻等。非苯芳烃不含苯环,但具有一定程度芳性的碳氢化合物,如薁、轮烯等。
芳香烃均易发生取代反应,不易起加成反应,且其环不易破裂。自然界中的芳香烃主要从煤焦油的分馏物和石油的芳构化产物中获得。煤焦油的主要成分是芳香烃;各种石油原油主要是脂肪烃,而芳香烃仅占0.2%~7.4%,但这些芳香烃如萘、菲等是造成石油急慢性毒性的重要因素。芳香烃可用作溶剂及化工原料。
苯是最基本的芳烃结构,通常采用含有3个共轭双键的六元环结构式表示,这是由德国化学家F.A.凯库勒在1865年提出的,称为凯库勒式。从组成上看,苯是不饱和烃,但它不易发生加成和氧化反应,易发生取代反应,并具有特殊的稳定性(即芳香性)。根据杂化轨道理论,苯分子中每个碳原子都是sp2杂化,各以两个sp2杂化轨道与相邻的两个碳原子的sp2杂化轨道重叠形成C—Cσ键,并以一个sp2杂化轨道与氢原子的1s轨道重叠形成C—Hσ键。
最简单的芳香烃是苯。最初从煤焦油中发现了苯及其他芳香族化合物,因此在相当长一段时间内,煤焦油是主要的芳烃来源。然而,煤焦油的产率仅为煤炭的3%,其中各种芳香族化合物的粗制品仅占0.3%。自20世纪40年代以来,主要从石油加工中制取芳烃。芳香烃均为液体或固体,不溶于水但能溶解在有机溶剂中。它们具有芳香性,不易发生加成反应,易发生取代反应,并对热和氧化剂较为稳定。芳香烃(特别是单环芳烃)是重要的化工原料,如对二甲苯用于制造涤纶;许多液体芳香烃可用作溶剂,如油漆易于溶解在芳香烃中。然而,长期接触液体芳香烃会导致皮肤脱水和脱脂而引发皮炎。芳香烃蒸汽对黏膜的刺激作用比脂肪烃更强,尤其是苯蒸气会对造血功能产生特殊的损害作用。但动物实验表明,烷基苯没有这种损害作用。
