Prismarene hosts can be prepared by a direct macrocyclization of functionalized naphthalene monomers. Water soluble prismarene hosts H1 and H3 bind to hydrophobic dications in phosphate buffered saline with Ka values exceeding 109 M−1 for G9. H1 and H3 should be considered alongside other high affinity hosts for a variety of chemical and biological applications.
