The synthesis is described of a set of new N-heterocyclic compounds which are derivatives of 1,10-phenanthroline. The compounds are designed to be general purpose chelating agents which could function as tri-, tetra- or hexadentate ligands with transition metal ions. Fused-ring molecular components have been included in the design of the compounds so that they may function as binding agents to DNA

act as a tridentate ligand, as in the complex with nickel perchlorate, where the metal to ligand ratio is 1 : 2. Electronic spectral data of the nickel(II) complexes are presented. The preparation of a tridentate ligand, 2-(1-methylhydrazino)-1,10-phenanthroline, and of nickel(II) and iron(II) complexes of this ligand is also reported.

The transient template effect is shown to be due to pH effects resulting from the presence of chromium(III) complexes in aqueous solution, rather than a process in which the open-chain ligands become co-ordinated to the metal centre. The crystal and molecular structure of a free macrocyclic ligand is reported, as is the preparation of somechromium(III) complexes
